Before the 16th century, indigenous Indians lived in the area, and in the mid-16th century, the area was colonized by Spain. On May 25th, 1810, the May Revolution broke out against Spanish colonial rule, and the first governmental council was established. 1812, the national hero St. Martin led the people to fight against Spanish colonial forces and declared independence on July 9th, 1816. On July 9, 1816, independence was declared. After a long period of turmoil and division, General Urquiza wrote the first constitution in 1853, establishing a federal republic. Urquiza became the country's first president after the constitution was adopted, which was transformed into a republic in 1860. The country was ruled by both military and civilian elements from the 1930s onwards, with a brutal crackdown on left-wing opponents in the mid-to-late-1970s. In 1982, a war broke out with Britain over the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, which led to the defeat of the military government and in 1983, the democratically elected government of Alfonsín of the Radical Party came to power and resumed the process of democratization, which led to the consolidation of the democratic system of government. The Justice Party's leader, Menem, has been in power for ten consecutive years since 1989, implementing neo-liberal economic policies, which once led to greater economic development in the country. In the latter part of May's rule, the economy went into recession, and social problems became more and more pronounced; after the election of Radical Party member Delaroua as President in 1999, he failed to stem the recession, which lasted for three years, and in December 2001 a serious political, economic, and social crisis erupted in the country, forcing Der to resign. Since then, the situation in the country has been in serious turmoil, with several changes of presidency within ten days. On January 1, 2002, Duard, a member of the Justice Party, was elected President by the National Assembly, and in May 2003, Kirchner, a member of the Justice Party, assumed the presidency, which led to a rapid recovery of the economy, political stability, improvement of people's livelihoods, and a rebound in international and regional influence. In October 2007, Cristina, wife of the President of the Republic of Argentina, was elected President of the country as a member of the center-left cross-party coalition "Front for Victory." As a candidate of the center-left cross-party coalition, "Victory Front" won the election and became the first elected female President in the history of the country. In October 2011, Kirchner was re-elected for a second term, and in November 2015, Macri, the candidate of the opposition coalition "We Change," was elected President.
